The New Canadians Centre offers these supports for English Language Learners:
English Classes (Beginner)
We provide free English classes to beginners, led by a volunteer Instructor. During in-person classes, free childcare is provided by Early Childhood Educators on-site.

English Conversation Group (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced)
We provide Conversation Groups to help newcomers of all language levels practice their English speaking and listening skills, led by a volunteer Instructor.

Public Speaking Training
In partnership with the Peterborough Toastmasters Club, we provide a free 5-week training program to newcomers to help develop their public speaking and presentation skills. This course is offered seasonally, usually twice a year.
Format: Training program with a certificate at the end

English in the Workplace
Through this program, we offer free language support to newcomers at their workplace. The schedule will be set by the newcomer and the instructor. Since the program takes place at the employees’ workplace, during working hours, it is important that the supervisor/manager is supportive. Some of the skills that can be taught are:
- Workplace vocabulary and terminology
- Telephone skills
- Giving and taking instructions and directions
- Workplace culture
- Participating in meetings
- Workplace communications and teamwork
- Workplace writing
- Conflict resolution
When: Ongoing intake through the year
